The Missing Man Formation

Since I was a little boy building model airplanes, I have known the significance and symbolism of the "missing man" formation. Pilots flew it for presidents, potentates, astronauts, and other pilots of note as a tribute and showing of love, respect, and camaraderie for a brother pilot. I never thought one would be flown for one of our family.

On August 20, 1999, at about 11:00 AM, the four chief instructors at Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa flew the missing man formation for our son, Yujin.

First photo shows the four planes approaching from the south.

Scroll down to see one plane part from the formation and head west.

Continue to see missing man heading into the west and setting sun.

Final shows the three remaining planes continuing in formation.
